Housing Choice Voucher Program

What is the Housing Choice Voucher program?

The Housing Choice Voucher program (also known as Section 8) is the Federal Government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing. The Housing Authority of Southeastern Utah administers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program in Grand and San Juan counties.

A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly on behalf of the participating family. The family then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. The amount of your housing voucher will vary depending on your household’s annual income.

A family that is issued a Voucher is responsible for choosing a suitable housing unit where the owner (landlord) agrees to rent under the guidelines of the Section 8 program. Rental units chosen by the household receiving a Voucher may include the family's current residence. Rental units must meet minimum standards of health and safety.
